Description
Summary:Managing municipal solid waste (MSW) is one of the great problems facing society. When waste is not properly disposed of, it can cause major health, social, and environmental problems. The study will present an analysis of the technical and economic potential of energy generation using biogas coming from a landfill in Extrema, a city in MG, Brazil. We used an algorithm developed in Scilab® and LandGEM®, and the results indicate that there is potential for energy generation using the landfill (by the optimum power of 250 kW). Furthermore, the project was not economically viable, when energy was sold in the distributed generation market, as the results showed negative Net Present value (NPV of US$-481,652.06), IRR of 0.49%, and LCOE of US$ 93.75.
