Summary:Colored wastewater produced by textile factories is a very dangerous pollutant since it is toxic and can cause cancer disease. A photodegradation of red base 218 textile dyes has been performed using a CdS/Pt/TiO2-P25 nanocomposite photocatalyst. This nanocomposite was prepared by depositing Pt into TiO2-P25 with chemical reduction and NaBH4 as the reducing agent. The photocatalyst formed was then sensitized with CdS by a hydrothermal method aided by sonication. TEM analysis shows that both Pt and CdS have been deposited on TiO2-P25, and the UV-Vis DRS results indicate that the composite samples have decreased their bandgap energy, therefore these photocatalysts respond positively to visible light. The fabricated nanocomposites were then applied to decolorize the red base 218 textile dye in a photoreactor with a mercury lamp and sunlight as photon sources. The process variations used in this study were the initial dye concentrations (15, 30, and 55mg/L) and the loading of photocatalysts (0.5, 1, and 2 g/L). Every 30 minutes during the process, the concentrations of the solution were analyzed using a UV-Vis Spectrophotometer. The optimum condition is achieved at the initial concentration of red base 218 of 15 mg/L. At this condition, the CdS/Pt/TiO2-P25 can completely decolorize up to 100% removal of dye with 1 g/L of CdS/Pt/TiO2-P25 nanocomposite for 150 minutes.
