Summary:Choral figurations—with new forms of performance, in various media, and across modes of writing—have become an increasingly prominent subject of interdisciplinary study.Footnote1 As a dynamic, transformational figure,Footnote2 the chorus has stood at the center of a wide-spread shift in theater studies in the German-speaking world since the 1990s. Through confrontations with aesthetic forms, this field responds to ecological, gender, and medial questions of the present as well as to control-societal changes of our time. This special issue of The Germanic Review presents new research on the chorus and choral figurations. It homes in on international debates about non-dramatic aesthetics and links them to the analysis of the environment.Footnote3
