Description
Summary:Energy is one of the most required resources which essential for economic and social development. However, limited information on energy consumption has created challenges towards sustainable energy consumption particularly in developing countries such as Malaysia. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to map the trend of energy flows from the primary source to the end-use of Malaysia’s energy sector. The data were collected and extracted from the National Energy Balance report which is annually published by the Energy Commissions of Malaysia. As the earliest and the latest data are available from 1996 until 2016, therefore, we decided to analyze the energy flows in three decades (1996, 2006, and 2016). The data were analyzed using an energy accounting framework while the complete picture of energy flows was presented using the Sankey diagram. According to the Sankey diagram indicated that the economic development of Malaysia is highly dependent on fossil fuel while the primary energy supply and final consumption have increased significantly in three decades. The study also revealed that high carbon emissions in Malaysia were significantly influenced by energy usage with R2=0.947. Therefore, this research has provided fundamental knowledge and direction for researchers in further research as well as practitioners to understand the status of the energy sector for better energy planning in Malaysia.
