Description
Summary:Mathematical literacy describes individual competence to apply mathematics in many contexts. The mathematical literacy ability of Indonesian students based on TIMSS and PISA is still low in solving problems in certain situations. This qualitative descriptive research tries to describe the mathematical literacy ability that is analyzed based on the results of the students’ work on some HOTS questions after the application of Realistic Mathematics Education (RME). The research subject is the fifth-grade elementary school students supported with the RME model. The data are in form of the students’ works on the HOTS questions and interviews. This research uses triangulation techniques for data validity, and the data analysis is conducted within three stages; data reduction, data presentation, and data conclusions/data verification. The reduction stage is used to facilitate understanding of test and interview data by simplifying and detailing the data. The data presentation is used to display all test results and display the results of students’ mathematical literacy ability data. The data conclusion is to draw the best conclusions from the analysis of students’ mathematical literacy ability through the RME model. The ability of 42 fifth-grade elementary school students through RME in solving HOTS questions is in the medium category. Those having high ability levels can demonstrate mathematical literacy ability in working on HOTS questions by fulfilling all indicators. The students with low ability can show three indicators in mathematical literacy. Meanwhile, the students with low ability levels can only use communication skills in mathematical literacy.
