Summary: | The COVID-19 pandemic causedamajor crisisinnumerous social spheres, especially among children, duetothe closure of schoolsinhundredsofcountries. The lockdown resultedinclasses being given exclusively online, which could have ledtoincreased participationinantisocial online behaviour suchascyberhate. This research aimstofind out the impact of lockdown on cyberhate in children in Primary Education and to analyse the role of social, emotional and moral competencies asa protective factor. The study was conducted with 792 primary school pupils (Mage=10.81, SD=0.85) from Cuenca (Ecuador). Aquestionnaire focusingoncyberhate, social and emotional competencies, empathy, and moral emotions scales was used. Aquantitative study was carried out withalongitudinal design with two data roundsofcollection separatedbyan intervalof five months. The results showed that total cyberhate and its dimensions, perpetration and propagation, increased longitudinally. Cyberhate among these participants couldbepredicted, after five monthsoflockdown, for being male, being in the highest school year, attendingastate school, and obtaining low scoresinmoral emotions. The effectsofthe lockdown have highlighted the importanceofface-to-face social relationships, which has exciting implicationsonthe importance of schoolindeveloping social, emotional, and moral competencies which foster coexistence and respect for diversity. |
