Summary: | Once again the decennial coincidence of three major art events motivated thousands of visitors from all over the globe to do the grand tour of Europe last summer. In 2017, the Venice Biennale, established in 1895, took place at the same time as documenta in Kassel, founded by Arnold Bode in 1955 and continued every four years until it was expanded during the 1980s to a five-year rhythm, and was also paralleled by Skulptur Projekte Münster, an international show of contemporary sculpture in public space which was launched in 1977 and presented its fifth edition during last year's art season. Inevitably, almost all feature articles of the daily press and international art journals referred to all three exhibitions in comparative views, in many cases providing a clear ranking concerning the quality of the curatorial concepts and the strength of the presented artworks. |
