Description
Summary:Railway sleeper is a horizontal laid element in railway system mainly used to distribute loads from the rail seat to the underneath ballast bed as well as to resist repetitive impact stress from dynamic interactions between the train and track infrastructure in services. Rubberised concrete is a great material selection for railway sleeper construction owing to its better impact resistance, higher toughness and ductility compares to unmodified concrete. However, it also possesses lower strength compared with the unmodified concrete. This study aims to evaluate the effects of incorporation rubber granules with sizes ranging from 1 mm to 4mm as replacement of fine aggregate by volume on the compressive, tension and flexural strengths of concrete. The test results indicate a significant reduction of compressive, tension and flexural strength as the rubber granules dosage get increased up to 60 kg/m3 at an interval of 20kg/m3, while high strength rubberised concrete is still achievable with proper mix design. Thisindicates the feasible use of rubberized concrete for railway sleepers construction with compressive strength achieved more than 55 MPa under BS EN 206-1.
