description This study aimed to describe the characteristics of the algebraic reasoning process of high school students with different cognitive stage in solving mathematical problem. Total of 37 students were given the Longeot test to classify students into the cognitive stage. This research was a descriptive study with a qualitative approach. Analysis of this research was the students’ algebraic reasoning was carried out in terms of the cognitive stage. The research was conducted at one of the public high schools in West Bandung Regency. Based on the answers given by students in the Longeot test, as many as 41% of students were still in the concrete stage, and as many as 59% of students were in the formal stage. At each cognitive stage, one student is taken randomly to be given an algebraic reasoning test on the algebraic function limit. The results showed that the process of algebraic reasoning for students with a concrete cognitive stage, tended to solve problems procedurally. Meanwhile, the process of algebraic reasoning for students with a formal cognitive stage can do modelling and bring up parameters in functions but have not been able to solve the problem correctly.
