Summary:This review summarizes the current literature on the mechanisms of the pathogenesis of a severe stress-induced disorder – post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Hormonal, biochemical, genetic, and morphofunctional changes occurring in PTSD in peripheral organs and in the central nervous system are characterized. Most researchers are found to have formed the view that chronic inflammation plays a leading role in PTSD. Data from studies of the actions of anti-inflammatory drugs with narrow biochemical targeting are presented. The review concludes with presentation of the hypothesis that the pathogenesis of PTSD should be seen as an integrative inflammatory process of peripheral and central systems. Therapeutic agents in this situation should probably be multifunctional drugs. Judging by the results of the authors’ experimental studies, these are likely to be drugs of the pharmacological heparins group.
