Effect of Cation Substitution on the Formation of Microcracks in Ni-Rich Layered Oxides

Transmission electron microscopy is used to study the formation of microcracks in agglomerated particles of positive electrode (cathode) materials based on Ni-rich layered oxide LiNi 0.6 Mn 0.2 Co 0.2 O 2 . Description
Summary:Transmission electron microscopy is used to study the formation of microcracks in agglomerated particles of positive electrode (cathode) materials based on Ni-rich layered oxide LiNi 0.6 Mn 0.2 Co 0.2 O 2 . The effect the magnesium cation additive has on the stability of the material against the accumulation of structural defects and formation of cracks upon prolonged galvanostatic cycling is demonstrated and a mechanism of stress relaxation is proposed.
