Description
Summary:[LANGUAGE= "English"] Purpose: It was aimed to report the outcome of secondary intraocular lens implantation performed for aphakia. Methods: Forty eyes of 35 patients which were administered to our institution for aphakia between January 2002 and December 2003, were included. Secondary intraocular lens implantation was performed in all patients. Change in visual acuity, refraction, intraocular pressure and the position of intraocular lens were evaluated before and after the operation. Results: The average age of the patients (17 men and 18 women) was 43.3±23.59 years. While thirty-two eyes had inadequate posterior capsular support, eight eyes had adequate capsular support. The sites of fixation of implanted intraocular lenses were as follows: Sulcus (n=8) and transsclerally fixated (n=32). Preoperative visual acuity was 0.29±0.22, whereas it was 0.5±0.29 postoperatively. Intraocular pressure was 14.75±2.08 mmHg preoperatively and 15.93±1.73 mmHg postoperatively. The spherical equivalent was 10±1.36 preoperatively and 1.82±0.85 postoperatively. Complications encountered after the implantation were clinically significant intraocular lens decentration (2-5%), visual axis opacification (3-7.5%), intraocular lens dislocation (2-5%), and pupillary capture (1-2.5%), transient anterior chamber or vitreous hemorage (5-12.5%), subconjonktival hemorage (6-15%).Conclusion: Secondary intraocular lens implantation can be safely achieved in aphakic eyes, since no permanent vision threatened complication was seen following the surgery.
