Description
Summary:This work presents the investigation of meltblown polypropylene (MBPP) membrane modified by hydrophilic Al2O3 nanoparticles for toluene-water separation. Results show that the pristine MBPP membrane is hydrophobic and the increase of Al2O3 nanoparticles content reduces the hydrophobicity of MBPP membranes. The WCAs reduced from 110.90 ± 3.40° to 52.53 ± 5.00° when the content of nanoparticles increased from 0 to 0.4 % w/w. The permeation flux of MBPP membranes reduced when the nanoparticle content increased due to the membrane thickness increasing correspondingly. The pristine MBPP membrane was not able to separate the toluene from water because of its organophilic property. The separation efficiencies of toluene-water for the modified MBPP membranes were above 97%. Thus, this study reveals that MBPP membranes deposited with Al2O3 nanoparticles can improve the separation of hydrocarbons from water.
