Summary: | Increasing professional demands in educational institutions around the world have resulted in the necessity for and emergence of teacher leadership which, according to Katzenmeyer and Moller (2009), is a "process by which teachers, individually or collectively, influence their colleagues, principals, and other members of school communities to improve teaching and learning practices with the aim of increased student learning and achievement" (p. 288). A further review of the literature on leadership and management in the TESOL profession revealed early scholarship in the field which pointed to the tensions that leaders face on a daily basis in ELT settings worldwide and highlighted the importance that leaders learn from their leadership experiences and contexts (Anderson, 2012; Christison & Murray, 2008, 2009; Coombe et al, 2008; Stephenson, 2008; Pennington & Hoekje, 2010). [...]the same literature highlighted factors that might hinder the emergence of teacher leadership in academic institutions. Across the various articles, this special issue provides the ELT community with a thorough overview of current theory, research and practice surrounding the concepts of leadership and management in TESOL, including contributions from the UK, Australia, the USA, Romania, Brazil, the UAE, Vietnam, Japan, Indonesia, Argentina and Uruguay. |
