Description
Summary:To claim a habitable identity means to locate oneself in a space that is comfortable, meaningful, expandable, and such location should call on the aesthetic, the intellectual, and the moral sides of the teacher, (personal notes, 2005) I see the collective centering of hope and organizing for justice firmly connected to our identity as English teacher educators. [...]in 2025, how do we make sense of ourselves as English teacher educators, of our work as members of ELATE? Neisha Terry (NCTE member since 2022) English education is the continuing pursuit of Mary Rose O'Reilley's question, taken from Ihab Hassan: "I wonder if it is possible to teach literature in such a way that people stop killing each other?" (O'Reilley, 1984, p. 109). Because of my own interests, I'd extend "literature" to also say writing and other literacy skills, too. The education of ELA teachers today encompasses knowledge of, skills with, and dispositions toward adolescents; addresses the social forces and current issues shaping teaching and learning; pushes against staid understandings of subject, pedagogy, and purpose; pushes for responsiveness to and equity for all identities. [...]English teacher educators are the people doing that work.6 As one of those people, I'd proffer that it's important to consider who we are right now and who we want to be as we look toward the future of our professional organization. In deflning ourselves as English teacher educators, we are defining the purposes and practices of ELATE.
