Summary:A magnificent exhibition of recycled metal sculptures was held there, as seen in the photo at the beginning of this article (fig. 1), the pieces also evoking the country's problems. A recurrent problem with State organizations, the FESPACO had to respect an obligatory official call for tenders for travel agents, which was impossible for the latter to meet as the ticket prices kept fluctuating. Mali replaced Togo as the guest of honor at the last minute, for, given the challenges of the moment, there was "no better partner than Mali to be the guest country," Fidele Tamini, president of the brand-new Organization Committee, stated on February 2.2 He invited the ceremony audience to applaud the presence of the Malian prime minister, Choguel Maïga, who insisted in his speech on "cinema's ability to shape attitudes, behavior, and opinions through the mes-sages conveyed," in this "combat for peace, freedom, our States' sovereignty, shoulder-to-shoulder before the terrorist hydra and its foreign State sponsors," a combat in which "the armed forces are the backbone of the Nation." [...]the minister of culture, Jean-Emmanuel Ouédraogo, read Burkinabe head of state Captain Ibrahim Traores speech, in which he cited Thomas Sankara: "There where discouragement sets in, the victory of those who persevere prevails," while specifying too that "as cinema is an art, it should fully play its role in raising awareness of the tragedies that African populations face, but also of the nations in crisis' glimmers of hope."
