Summary: | The reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) technologies developed over the decades to create a smart radio environment for its efficient energy and affordable cost. RISs use numerous inexpensive passives reflecting elements to generate a phase shift in the impinging signal to improve the signal propagation between the sender and the receiver. In addition, the vast number of scattering devices enables the smart radio system to be accomplished and optimized by actively regulating the propagation parameters of the signal for wireless communications. Firstly, this paper introduces the reconfigurable intelligent surfaces in smart wireless communication systems. Secondly, the fundamental ideas of the RIS and the various implementations that makes its reconfigurability practicable are discussed in this paper. Furthermore, we will focus on using the RIS in contexts beyond wired networks. Finally, we outline critical practical hurdles and future research goals for implementing RIS-assisted wireless networks beyond 5G communications. |
