Summary: | Dear Editor, While thanking Dr. Hibbert for the fine review of the book, I am feeling invited to indicate more explicitly the reasons why the opening chapter (“Fostering diversity of thinking in measurement science”) was written. Here are some examples from my hidden list: the Committee writing the Guide for the Expression of Uncertainty in Measurement (GUM), choosing for the future edition a single statistical approach, the “Bayesian” replacing the “frequentist” one; the BIPM proposing to change the International System of Measurement Units (SI), by exclusively using “constants” in the definitions of the SI; the singled set of “recommended values” admitted by Committees in several fields for the “official” numerical values of quantities; pretending permanent validity in time of numerical values once stipulated; the interest and vision of too many scientists strictly limited to their discipline. First of all, diversity remains a richness. |
