Summary: | Biodegradable films are produced from natural polymers, mainly polysaccharides, and proteins with potential application in the pharmaceutical and food industry. The objective of this work was to evaluate the behavior of the babassu coconut mesocarp with the incorporation of cupuaçu extracts and to characterize the synergistic interactions between organic plasticizers, the reticulated structure of carbohydrates and proteins, the plasticizing power of water, and its influence on the physical properties of interest for food and drug packaging. The biodegradable films were prepared by the casting method analyzing two formulations with different plasticizer contents (1 mL and 5 mL of glycerol). Films with lower amounts of glycerol were more soluble and had higher moisture content. The water vapor permeability ranged from 5.12 to 7.63, and the films were classified as having moderate water vapor permeability. The infrared and X-ray diffraction spectra revealed important bond peaks in the films, confirming the cross-linking of sodium alginate by calcium chloride.
