Description
Summary:Purpose of Review The aim of this systematic review is to summarize the effects that ketamine use and ketamine cystitis have on sexual function. A systematic review of the literature was conducted in October 2022. The inclusion criteria were articles that focused on the relationship between ketamine use with sexual function and dysfunction. Upon review, 4 full-text articles were included in the analysis. Recent Findings Ketamine has historically been used in anesthetics and pain management. It is now being increasingly used in the mental health field to treat depression and recreational ketamine use has grown worldwide. The increase in ketamine use has raised concerns about the myriad of side effects ketamine may have. There have been several new reports of a relationship between ketamine use, ketamine cystitis, and sexual dysfunction. Summary Among the included articles, ketamine use was associated with erectile dysfunction (ED) in men, with a range of 30.8 to 52% of users reporting ED. Ketamine use and ketamine cystitis correlated with a decreased female sexual function index (FSFI) score, and therefore sexual dysfunction in women. Lastly, ketamine use correlated to lower brain activation in response to sexual cues, which may partly reflect the neural basis for sexual dysfunction. Future research is needed to explore the full range of sexual dysfunction and more studies must be conducted to explore how ketamine use and duration are associated with male and female sexual dysfunction.
