Summary:Fibroblasts synthesize all components of the extracellular matrix of the dermis, including collagen, elastin, proteoglycans, and minor proteins. Consequently, the changes in the size and functional status of these cells may disrupt the formation of intercellular substance, which will contribute to the appearance of outward signs of aging. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate age-related changes in the size and proliferation of fibroblasts in the dermis of a human. The work showed that the total number of fibroblasts in the dermis of a human decreases progressively with age. The number of PCNA-positive fibroblasts, which reflects the proliferative activity, also significantly decreased with age. Thus, the reduction in the number of fibroblasts in the dermis with age is partly due to the reduced activity of proliferation.
