Summary:During cruise SO 136 of the German Research Vessel ‘SONNE’ to the Tasman Sea and Southern Ocean (16. Oct. – 12. Nov. 1998 from Wellington/NZ to Hobart/Tasmania) numerous deep-sea sediment samples were collected with such devices as a box-corer, an epi-benthic sledge and a multi-corer. These samples yielded extremely rich fossil and living ostracod faunas from water depths ranging between 562 m and 4520 m. Herein, the authors present taxonomic revisions and functional morphological interpretations of one of the more common elements of the ostracod assemblages: the platycopids. In total, from the open-ocean waters west and south of New Zealand, 7 platycopid species were recovered alive, all of which are new to science and are described in this text. Five species belong to the genusCytherella, however, for 2 unusual platycopid species we have erected 2 new genera:Cytherella hiatus n. sp.,Cytherella intonsa n. sp.,Cytherella corpusculum n. sp.,Cytherella plusminusve n. sp.,Cytherella permutata n. sp.,Grammcythella dyspnoea n. gen. n. sp. andInversacytherella tanantia n. gen. n. sp.
