Summary: | Geopolymers incorporating kaolin clay or its derived form as one of the source materials are referred to as kaolin clay-based geopolymers. Kaolin clay is an inexpensive and naturally occurring pozzolanic source material. This review comprehensively examines studies related to the microstructure of raw kaolin clay through XRD, XRF, and SEM analysis. Additionally, this work summarizes the influence of various parameters such as curing temperature, S/L ratio, SS/SH ratio, and molarity of NaOH solution on the characteristics of kaolin clay-based geopolymers. This paper reviews the studies conducted on fresh, strength, and durability characteristics of geopolymers utilizing kaolin clay as source material. The properties of geopolymers were improved by the incorporation of raw kaolin clay. From the literature review, kaolin clay is shown to possess the characteristics of an excellent geopolymer precursor and can be blended with other amorphous precursors to produce a sustainable geopolymer binder with adequate strength and durability properties, which are comparable to conventional cementitious binders. |
