Purpose
To report a case of vascular lesion (VL) located in the region of skin and internal mucosa of the lower lip, treated with a diode laser. A 70-year-old man presented for evaluation of a set of nodular lesions with exophytic growth, sessile, purple-colored, well-defined edges and contours, soft consistency, and lobulated, measuring approximately 3.0 cm × 2.0 cm, in the skin area of the lower lip, on the left side. During an intraoral physical examination, a purplish stain was observed, with a soft consistency, and with well-defined limits, measuring approximately 4.0 cm × 2.0 cm, in the internal mucosa of the lower lip extending to the alveolar mucosa, on the left side. Under the clinical diagnosis of VL, the lesion was treated with photocoagulation with a diode laser, using a wavelength of 808 nm and 400-µm fiber optic, in continuous mode, with 1.5-W power, perpendicular, at a distance of 2 mm in height between the optical fiber of the device and the tissue surface. The intraoral lesion was being operated before the extraoral one. The irradiation was applied until the lesion got whitish in appearance. At 14 months after the procedure, the patient showed no clinical signs of recurrence and remains under follow-up.
Conclusion
It can be concluded that photocoagulation with diode laser is an effective technique in the treatment of VL because it did not compromise the patient’s aesthetics, and there was no bleeding during the procedure; it did not damage any adjacent structures and there was no need for suture. |
