Summary: | Machiavellianism is a “dark” personality trait that is proven to affect performance in managerial positions. The Machiavellian Personality Scale (MPS), a widely accepted measurement for the assessment of Machiavellian behavior in organizational and business environments, can provide researchers with valuable information regarding a business manager’s personality, concerning dimensions such as distrust of others, desire for control, amorality, and desire for social status. The aim of this study is to assess the psychometric properties of the Greek version of MPS (GR-MPS), taking as a basis the research on the original English version. A sample of 345 participants, internal stakeholders of family businesses (255 males, 90 females), aged from 18 to over 65 approached using information provided in the Annual Economic Guide of ICAP, where all Greek businesses are registered. The average inter-item correlation between the MPS items was .

. The internal structure of the MPS questionnaire was investigated using confirmatory factor analysis, which supported a four-factor structure. Associations of the MPS with sociodemographic variables were examined. The correlation coefficients between MPS and scores on the domains of emotional intelligence using the WLEIS questionnaire were computed. In the present study, it is demonstrated that the Greek version of the MPS constitutes a valid and reliable research instrument for evaluating Machiavellian behavior of family business managers. |
