Description
Summary:For people in the second half of life (aged 50+) struggling with difficulties arising from the normative aging process, religion can be a positive help in adaptation to old age. This adaptation is measured, inter alia, by a high sense of self-dignity. An analysis of literature on the psychology of aging and old age suggests that the influence of religious meaning system on sense of self-dignity may be mediated by wisdom. This study explores the relationship between religious meaning system and sense of self-dignity and wisdom as a potential mediator of this relationship among adults 50+. Longitudinal studies with triplicate measurements were carried out on a sample of 246 Polish individuals aged 50+. The mediation analysis with bias-corrected bootstrapping method confirmed that the relation between religious meaning system and sense of self-dignity is mediated by wisdom. These results suggest that religious meaning system, contributing to the increase of wisdom of adults in the second half of life, has a positive effect on the increase in sense of self-dignity.
