Summary: | The white paper "Addressing the Oral Health Needs of Hispanics in the U.S.: An Exploration of Oral Health Status, Dental Needs, Utilization of Dental Services, and Workforce" represented the conclusions of a research workshop led by the Hispanic Dental Association (HDA) and the CareQuest Institute for Oral Health teams that brought together national and International senior researchers and academic advisors, HDA student and leadership teams, and the CareQuest leadership team during October 2022.1,2 The white paper is essential for advancing oral health equity among Hispanic communities.The Hispanic/Latino population represents the only recognized ethnic group and the largest mlnorltized racial/ethnic group In the United States, comprising 19% or 63.9 million ofthe US population. Hispanic/Latino people (hereafter, Hispanic) originated from at least 20 countries with the largest subgroups being people originating from Mexico, Puerto Rico, El Salvador, Dominican Republic, and Cuba.3 Hispanics are youngerthan the US population (29.5years vs 37.8years). Moreover, approximately one In three Hispanics is born outside the United States, and one in five has a bachelor's degree or a higher level of educational attainment. Interestingly, almost the same proportion of Hispanics aged youngerthan 65years do not have health Insurance (18%). |
