Summary: | The aim of this work is to explore the possibilities of phase change materials (PCMs) based thermal energy storage (TES) system for solar water heaters (SWH) to ensure the availability of hot water for domestic purposes during nighttime. The system contains basically two heat absorbing units, namely water storage tank and PCM-based heat storage unit. The storage unit consists of a galvanized iron box with a PCM box filled with Salt Hydrates, which is used as PCM. At the daytime, storage tank is filled with water completely and allowed to circulate between SWH and PCMs. The water receives heat from the SWH and transfers it to the PCMs the PCM change the phase by absorbing latent heat and excess heat being stored as sensible heat. Results showed that about 10 liters more hot water can be utilized from the same storage tank volume. |
