The growth of built-up area of Banda Aceh and its implication to agricultural land in peri-urban area in Aceh Besar Regency

The growth of Banda Aceh affected the surrounding district in Aceh Besar Regency, especially Kecamatan Krueng Barona Jaya dan Ingin Jaya (referred to as KKI). In the Masterplan, KKI is planned as a District Strategic Area (DSA). This area has experienced the impact of built-up area expansion caused by the growth of Banda Aceh City. This area become a peri-urban area, characterized by rapid development of urban function and extensive conversion of agricultural land into built-up area. This study aims to examine the pattern of land use change in KKI from 2005 to 2021 and analyze the implications of continuously developed urban growth on agricultural land allocation based on the spatial master plan of Aceh Besar Regency in 2012-2032. The classification of urban growth patterns in this study is analyzed with the patch-based Landscape Expansion Index (LEI). The results showed that built-up area increased by 759,45 ha from 2005-2021, mostly with expansion pattern. In the other hand, the agricultural land reduced 239,58 ha by 2021. This study shows that the growth of Banda Aceh City has caused agricultural land shrinkage in peri-urban area, which could hinder the ability of Aceh Besar Regency as one of the biggest food producers in Aceh.
