Summary:This paper runs a bibliometric analysis in order to present the characteristics and evolution of the publications of the research on board financial expertise. Our sample is composed of all the documents from the Web of Science for the period 1900–2020. The findings show that financial expertise research activity has grown exponentially, although in Europe it has been scantly developed. The analysis also reveals the most cited authors and papers, including the most frequent topics in this research area, highlighting that current trends are moving toward corporate social responsibility and ethical aspects. Potential research directions are also provided by suggesting specific research themes and conceptual approaches. This analysis has direct implications for academics in positioning their future research. The increasing importance of the assessment of scientific production has also made bibliometric studies have significant implications for universities and policymakers.
