Description
Summary:Jewell gives a brief overview of the National Committee on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (NCUTCD) and ITE's involvement/participation in this professional organization. The NCUTCD was formed in 1980. The predecessor committee, formed in 1931, actually wrote the 1935 through 1971 MUTCD editions. Since 1971, these committees have advised FHWA on the MUTCD initiating recommended changes, reviewing proposals, and submitting comments on rulemakings concerning the MUTCD. There are more than 300 members from diverse backgrounds in NCUTCD volunteering their time and expertise. Members attend two in-person, 3-day meetings a year; the Annual Meeting occurs in January and is held in Arlington VA and the Mid-year Meeting occurs in June, held in conjunction with the AASHTO Committee on Traffic Engineering meeting. ITE, one of the founding organizations of the original committee, is one of the larger sponsor delegations having eight voting members on council. There are also eight associate members who must also stay on top of all items and issues being considered by council, ready to substitute for an ITE voting member during a council meeting at a moment's notice.
