Description
Summary:In one instance, Kris covers her camera to masturbate and shortly after a department agent appears at her home to give her a fine. [...]shadesters are viewed as a subclass of people, and thus experience imposed limitations on every aspect of their lives. In this current context of public attacks against the LGBTQ+ population, Marisa Crane's novel constitutes an exceptional read as a fictional reflection on those same politics. [...]it demonstrates that in order to keep going forward, being irrevocably yourself in the face of hate and finding your own accepting community are key factors that will not quiet the voices that are being suppressed. All in all, I Keep my Exoskeletons to Myself is a beautifully intricate story about queer resilience, in which mom and daughter find an unexpected source of hope and strength in community and connection despite the state's interest in isolating and shaming them for their mistakes.
