Summary:The performance of the extracted banana stem was tested using synthetic wastewater for turbidity removal. The banana stem was chosen for this study due to its abundance as waste. Previously, studies on banana stems were carried out by researchers but did not focus much on its active coagulant agent. This study was carried out to analyze the effect of the extraction process in optimizing the active coagulant agent of the banana stem as a natural coagulant for turbidity removal from synthetic wastewater. Banana stem underwent thorough physical, chemical, and morphological characterization in preparation as a natural coagulant. This study found that banana stems performed superior polysaccharide content, which can act as the active coagulant agent with hemicellulose and lignin. Under optimum operating conditions (2% H 2 SO 4 at 120 °C for 1.5 h), the highest polysaccharide extracted was 310.23 mg/mL. The coagulation process using the extracted banana stem performed the removal of turbidity up to 93.4% under optimum conditions (400 mg/L dosage at pH 6). In general, this study showed the potential of extracted banana stems as a natural coagulant to replace conventional chemical coagulants due to their efficiency and eco-friendly properties.
