Summary: | Together with the red light that accompanied their entrance, the witches were also reminiscent of the three drops of blood required for the pact with the Devil. The entrances came after the Macbeths had committed to murder Duncan (1.7), after Macbeth had become the king (around the end of act two), and in the sleepwalking scene of Lady Macbeth (5.1), where the witch assumed the role of the voice of blood speaking to the Lady. [...]the actors formed a line and knelt, with their hands outstretched, as a thermal camera image of them from above was shown on the screen, the warmer and cooler zones of their bodies shimmering. Whilst the contrast with what preceded the ending was distinct, there was still a dialogue on how different forms of art describe, depict, and aestheticize death, destruction, and human suffering, and how living human bodies are used to convey such depictions. |
