Summary:To understand the functions of language, one must understand the use of language in context. In a complex reality, it may be wise to focus our attention not on what context is, but on how we might approach context, function, and structure in a coherent and empirical way. In recent years, Dialogic Syntax (Du Bois 2007, 2014; Du Bois & Giora 2014) has been suggested as a way to explain the interdependencies between co-present utterances of different speakers and the analogical transfer of meanings between resonating utterances.
