Summary: | [...]link, children with lower executive function skills may be more likely to struggle with reading (Barnes et al. 2022). [...]the three core, early-developing executive function skills (working memory, inhibitory control, and cognitive flexibility) contribute to the development of more complex self-regulation activities, like planning, monitoring, or organization (Cartwright et al. 2024). An educator's actions in this instructional activity reflect the three core components of executive function described below: * Working memory, the most widely studied executive function skill, involves both storage and processing, or holding information in mind and updating it as needed. * Cognitive flexibility is the ability to switch between different activities or tasks, shift among various elements of a single task, or change course in response to information. * Inhibitory control is the ability to suppress unimportant information or responses and to resist distractions. Because early reading development is so complex, these executive function skills are needed to help learners manage and coordinate all of the types of information involved in reading, such as phonological information, letters' sounds, words' meanings, and structures of texts, just to name a few. [...]these skills are the necessary building blocks for readers to manage the combination of decoding words on a page and comprehending what they mean (Duke & Cartwright 2021). |
