Summary:Written and compiled during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, The Taylor Mac Book is a celebration not only of the legacy and work of performance artist Taylor Mac but also of the magic and power of live performance as a form of communal ritual and queer kinship. Three subsequent chapters (by Kim Marra, Lisa A. Freeman, and Jennifer Buckley) offer divergent critical perspectives on Mac’s most celebrated work, A 24-Hour Decade History of Popular Music, in its various incarnations, especially the twenty-four-hour-long durational performance at St. Ann’s Warehouse in Brooklyn in 2016. Two additional essays expend the analysis of 24-Decade History to US dramaturgy and design (by Sissi Liu) as well as the influence of the US songbook (by Román).
