Summary: | Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, questioning, intersex, and asexual (LGBTQIA+) youth are at a higher risk for suicidal ideation, risk, and attempt than heterosexual cisgender peers. Given legislation across the United States that targets the LGBTQIA + community, significant concerns for the safety and well-being of youth create an urgent need for school counselors to advocate and act. The following article examines what has been determined through various qualitative and quantitative research studies to describe the experiences of LGBTQIA + youth with a specific focus on the potential impact manifested in school environments. This data is connected to recent Florida legislation impacting this population and conceptualized through the framework of the American School Counseling Association Model. Recommendations are provided to assist school counselors in developing a supportive environment for all students, including LGBTQIA + students. |
