Description
Summary:Turkish women have managed to make a name for themselves in history books through their dedication and courage, both for the state and the nation, since ancient times. In this context, the role of Ottoman women was significant in the struggle against imperialist powers during the decline of the Ottoman Empire. The social problems resulting from the Balkan Wars and World War I experienced by the Ottoman Empire not only trapped the Ottoman people in a dilemma but also created an opportunity for the strengthening of national unity. The people, regardless of gender or age, participated in the defense of their homeland. During this period, the efforts of women, especially behind the front lines, were instrumental in meeting the needs of the Ottoman soldiers. Women's societies and aid organizations established during the war years were the result of this process of organization. Some of these societies, established for the purpose of aiding the population and supporting the army, were also founded in Kastamonu. In our study, we aimed to determine the activities of different societies established in Kastamonu and the role of women in these societies during the period from the First Constitutional Era to World War I, based on local and national press, books, articles, and official documents related to the Kastamonu province.
