description Oral adsorbents have attracted increasing attention as a potential therapeutic strategy for the removal of toxic substances from the gastrointestinal tract. This review aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the structural and mechanic properties of oral adsorbents such as activated charcoal, medical clays, zeolites, silica-based adsorbents, dietary fibers (carbohydrates alginate, chitosan, pectin, carrageenan etc.), and their physicochemical properties. The review also explores the mechanisms of action of oral adsorbents, including physical adsorption, ion exchange, and specific binding interactions. Furthermore, we provide an overview of the factors that influence the adsorption capacity and selectivity of oral adsorbents. The summary of recent advances in the usage of thiolated adsorbents is discussed, which provides valuable insights into the structural and mechanistic properties of oral adsorbents and their potential as a therapeutic option for the removal of toxic substances from the gastrointestinal tract.
