Summary:India's 2024 election marked a significant shift in the country's political landscape. The ruling party, led by Prime Minister Modi, experienced a decline in popularity and seat tally. Despite being hailed as a popular leader, Modi's economic policies, driven by India Inc., resulted in economic pain that could not be ignored by the electorate. The election campaign was centered around Modi's persona, with the hope of surpassing 400 seats and achieving a two-thirds supermajority. However, the party fell short, winning only 240 seats, a significant decrease from their previous tally. While the ruling party retained its core vote bank, it faced challenges in the Hindi heartland and lost its stronghold in Uttar Pradesh. The opposition, particularly Congress, made gains among landed peasants and the rural poor. The election also highlighted the importance of caste politics, with the Mandal politics resurfacing and impacting the ruling party's performance. Overall, the 2024 election marked a turning point in Indian politics, signaling a shift in public sentiment towards the ruling party.
