Summary:This paper presents the results overview of the study of magnetic and magnetostrictive properties in intermetallic compounds based on heavy rare earth elements, conducted by both domestic and foreign researchers and the authors of the work itself. Information on modern methods of searching for the composition with the most optimal magnetostrictive parameters is given on the example of compounds of the following systems: Tb0.3Dy0.7Co2, Dy1-x(Tb0,7Ho0,3)хCo2, Dy1-x(Tb0,55Ho0,45)хCo2, Dy1-x(Tb0,4Ho0,6)xCo2, Tb1-хSmхFe2 и (Tb1-хYx)0/8Sm0/2Fe2. The study made it possible to establish the compositions of multicomponent alloys based on substituted alloys of the RM2 type, where R is one of the heavy REM, and M is an element of the iron group having high magnetostriction values in sufficiently weak fields. In addition, the influence of the structure of compounds on the magnetic properties and patterns of formation of magnetostrictive characteristics, depending on the composition, has been established.
