Description
Summary:Research in the fields of criminology, sociology, and psychology has focused on prison and gender, particularly on women. However, there has been limited attention given to Muslim women and their experiences in prison. This research gap provides an opportunity to examine the relationship between Muslim women and the prison experience. Muslim women face a triple disadvantage of gender, race, and faith discrimination, as well as a double sentence of prison followed by a lifetime of community stigma upon release. This article explores the challenges Muslim women face in terms of prison needs and service delivery, as well as the stigma and shame they experience from their communities post-release. It suggests a discussion on emerging areas of scholarly work that shed light on the carceral experience for Muslim women and provides recommendations for policy practice and future research. The challenges faced by Muslim women in prison and post-release highlight the need for a better understanding of their experiences and the development of appropriate support systems.
