30 year review of the zooplankton in three conservation units on the Upper Paraná River, Brazil, with notes for stressors, flood pulse, and public politics

This review was based on the freshwater zooplankton studies carried out in the Integral Protection Conservation Unit Várzeas of Ivinhema River State Park, Ilha Grande National Park, and the Ilhas and Várzeas of Rio Paraná Protected Area in the Upper Paraná River, Brazil, from 1993 to 2023. Description
Summary:This review was based on the freshwater zooplankton studies carried out in the Integral Protection Conservation Unit Várzeas of Ivinhema River State Park, Ilha Grande National Park, and the Ilhas and Várzeas of Rio Paraná Protected Area in the Upper Paraná River, Brazil, from 1993 to 2023. The aims were (i) to gather information from these studies, (ii) to understand ecological advances, and (iii) to increase the knowledge of the zooplankton studies in this area. The results showed that most studies have investigated the groups of testate Amoebae, Copepoda, Cladocera, and Rotifera together, rather than just one community. Field studies were conducted more frequently and long-term surveys than other methods. We observed that estimates of the composition and diversity were the main measures used to investigate the changes in the structure of the zooplankton community. Functional diversity and beta diversity have been the primary attributes used in the studies, particularly since 2009, with both showing a positive trend in application over time. Thus, the review reinforced the importance of continued efforts and the importance of combining methodological approaches and multiple predictors to understand how zooplankton biodiversity changed in the conservation units over the years.
