Summary: | In this article, we discuss the character of the Paraguayan State in the mid-19th century, tracing its administrative and socio-cultural policies through State regulations, court cases and demographic data. High numbers of illegitimate children and female-headed households do not, on the other hand, contradict the patriarchal character of Paraguayan family structures and society. Keywords: Paraguay, State, Church, gender, family, public morals. 1. |
