Description
Summary:The Clinical Application of MMPI Special Scales (2nd ed.) (see record 1995-97593-000) is an update of Levitt's original critical overview of the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI) "special scales" (pre-MMPI-2). It adds three new features to the first edition: (a) a "human computer program" containing a set of diagnostic statements based on the special scales and individual items, (b) what the authors describe as "the first comprehensive attempt to diagnose personality disorders from special scales and items" (p. vii), and (c) a very brief discussion of the MMPI-2 content scales. Levitt and Gotts start out well in their separation of the bad, the questionable, and the good special scales. The first few chapters would make for one or two solid journal articles, but the reviewer was often confused by the rest of the book. The authors had a good idea: Take the better special MMPI scales, add some new ones developed by the senior author and colleagues (The Indiana Bational Scales), and develop the human computer program. In practice, though, the reviewer found getting through much of the book to be a struggle. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2016 APA, all rights reserved)
