Description
Summary:Reviews the book, Behavior, Bias, and Handicaps: Labeling the Emotionally Disturbed Child by Judy W. Kugelmass (see record 1987-97622-000). This volume presents the results of a yearlong ethnographic study of one exemplary public school mainstreaming program. Kugelmass investigated the Education Center at Medgar Evers school in Lakeside, a program designed to facilitate the integration of emotionally disturbed students with their nonhandicapped peers. The results of this extensive data collection are presented in five chapters of this eight-chapter monograph. The book chronicles a number of attempts over the past 20 years to racially integrate Medgar Evers, a predominantly Black school in an economically poor neighborhood with an overabundance of single parent families. This book's drawback is an occasional lack of integration in the form of advanced organizers and transition materials to help the reader sort through the wealth of ideas presented.
