Summary: | Reviews the book, Attitudes, Conflict, and Social Change edited by Bert T. King and Elliot McGinnies (see record 1973-06704-000). This is not, as the name might imply, a volume of integrated theory and research. Rather, it is based upon the proceedings of the Symposium on Attitudes, Conflict, and Social Change that was held at the University of Maryland. A book based upon a symposium will reflect all of the virtues and weaknesses that are inherent in the symposium format. The most glaring weakness of virtually any symposium is the lack of coherence and continuity among the various papers. In the present volume, not only is there a considerable range of subtopics within the general framework but there are abrupt changes in levels and units of analysis. The book should certainly be read by social psychologists who are active in attitude research, not only for the content itself but to gain some exposure to sociological and political science approaches to the field.
