Description
Summary:ERIK ERIKSON HAS SUGGESTED THAT THE ATTAINMENTS OF A "SENSE OF IDENTITY" AND OF AN EGO-SYNTONIC OCCUPATIONAL ROLE ARE THE INTERRELATED, SOCIALLY PROVIDED MECHANISMS PRESENT DURING ADOLESCENCE TO PROMOTE IDENTITY FORMATION. WHILE THIS GENERAL FORMULATION WAS SUPPORTED IN A SAMPLE OF COLLEGE STUDENTS, THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE 2 MECHANISMS APPEARED TO STEM FROM THEIR MUTUAL CONNECTIONS WITH THE ONGOING PROCESS OF "ENCULTURATION." WHEN THE SAMPLE WAS DIVIDED ON THE BASIS OF EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND AND OF VALUE ORIENTATION, THE FORMULATION ONLY HELD FOR CERTAIN SUBGROUPS. IT IS CONCLUDED THAT THE PARTICULAR MECHANISMS ENTERING INTO ADOLESCENT IDENTITY FORMATION DEPEND ON PERSONAL BACKGROUND AND VALUES, AND NO SPECIFIC MECHANISMS ARE NECESSARILY UNIVERSAL. (15 REF.)
