Description
Summary:Reports the work done to measure ability in Latin based on the results from two vocabulary tests. In the "easy vocabulary test', lists of 100 words, 50 in Latin and 50 in English were given to 252 first year pupils in 10 schools. The results in terms of the median number of correct words indicated great variation in the first year classes. The correlations between performance in the tests and the final grade, showed a close agreement. This indicated the usefulness of the tests in rating pupils. In the "standard vocabulary test', results with 239 words in terms of the averages and median correct numbers from 19 schools were calculated. Exceptionally poor or exceptionally good pupils in a class produced discrepancies in the two measures. The scale value for both the tests were determined by the method used by Buckingham.
